Real Friends recently hit the road in support of their recent album, “Blue Hour.” They made their third stop at Varsity Theatre in Minneapolis. The band has entered a new chapter. They are no longer bound by a record label contract. They are making music for their fans and are fueled by the fans. They also brought along some friends to embark on this journey of independence.

Carly Cosgrove brought their infectious energy to the stage. They captivated the audience with their blend of indie rock and emo sensibilities. The trio’s tight musicianship and Lucas Naylor’s passionate vocals created a sonic experience that was both raw and refined.
The setlist beautifully merged both old and new songs. Tracks from their latest album, “The Cleanest Houses Are Empty,” blended seamlessly with fan favorites. The crowd, a mix of die-hard fans and newcomers, sang along to every word. This created a sense of community and shared experience. This set the tone for what was the rest of the night to come.

What followed was a heartfelt performance by Can’t Swim. The band’s signature blend of heavy, melodic rock and emotive lyrics. It was a perfect fit for the rest of the lineup. Their emotional vocals, driving rhythms, and soaring guitar interludes created a wall of sound that was both powerful and exhilarating. Can’t Swim’s ability to balance moments of quiet introspection with explosive outbursts of energy was truly impressive. The crowd was fully immersed, singing along to every word, swaying to the rhythm, and starting mosh pits. The collective energy in the room was palpable. They finished their set and prepared the crowd for what was next.

Real Friends’ setlist was a nostalgic journey through their discography. Hits like “Our Love Was Like a Sad Song” and “From the Outside” ignited the crowd. The band’s energy was infectious, and the crowd sang along to every word. Their newer material is a departure from the classic pop-punk sound they are defined by. Yet, it still held its own with a high level of musicianship and well-written material. Cody Muraro’s powerful vocals kept the energy high throughout the night. He stage dove into the crowd and even sang in the middle of them. Real Friends re-created the energy of a DIY garage show. They brought the fans into a 1 on 1 intimate experience. And made it a night they will never forget.

If you’re a fan of pop and pop-punk, Real Friends is a must-see. Their live shows are a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern energy.
