The “California is for Lovers Fest” at The Torch in the LA Coliseum was a lively, nostalgic trip back to the glory days of the Warped Tour. It was bursting with energy, emotion, and a sense of community that only live music can bring. Curated by Hawthorne Heights, the festival celebrated its 20th anniversary with a mix of iconic emo, punk, and alternative rock bands that shaped a generation and still inspire music lovers today.
Hawthorne Heights kicked things off with a powerful set, playing their landmark album “The Silence in Black and White” from start to finish. It was an emotional and celebratory performance, capturing the raw intensity that made them stars in the emo scene. Their set was a tribute to their past and a reminder of their lasting impact on the genre.
Saosin followed with an electrifying performance of their self-titled debut album, also celebrating its 20th anniversary. Their dynamic stage presence and intricate musicianship reminded everyone of their unique place in post-hardcore music, with fans soaking up every note and lyric like it was the early 2000s all over again.
Finch brought more nostalgia, channeling the raw emotion and energy of their early work. Their performance was a masterclass in post-hardcore anthems, swinging between fierce aggression and melodic moments, keeping the crowd engaged and ecstatic.
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, known for their mix of rock and emo, delivered a fierce and heartfelt set. Songs like “Face Down” sparked huge sing-alongs, showing that their music still hits home for fans of all ages. Meanwhile, A Static Lullaby took the stage with the same passion they were known for, performing like they hadn’t missed a beat in years. Their set was tight, energetic, and full of the raw intensity that made them standouts in the post-hardcore scene.
Newcomers New Aesthetic and Boycomma showcased the festival’s blend of old and new. New Aesthetic brought a fresh, punk-infused sound, while Boycomma captivated the audience with their mix of shoegaze and post-rock vibes.
This Wild Life added a sweet acoustic touch to the day, offering a softer yet emotional side of the festival. Their harmonies and stripped-back style created a calm moment amidst the high-energy lineup, making for a memorable listening experience.
Bilmuri and Stick to Your Guns cranked up the volume and intensity. Bilmuri’s high-energy, genre-blending set had the crowd jumping, while Stick to Your Guns brought their signature mix of melodic hardcore and metalcore, igniting a mosh pit and filling the event with their fierce spirit.
Overall, the “California is for Lovers Fest” was more than just a music celebration; it was a testament to the lasting legacy of emo and punk. It felt like a family reunion for artists and fans alike, united by a love for the music that shaped them. With its mix of nostalgic anthems, fresh sounds, and a fun festival vibe that included activities like the “Dunk-a-Punk” booth, it was a perfect tribute to the scene’s past, present, and future.
