On Tuesday, September 27th, over 50 artists came together at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles to celebrate the life of Taylor Hawkins. The six-hour show began at 7:00 PM with a performance by Violet Grohl who sang “Hallelujah” accompanied by Alain Johannes on the guitar and ended at 1:00 AM with the Foo Fighters performing their hit “Everlong” accompanied by Chad Smith on the drums.
In between, we were met with legendary rock bands such as Def Leppard, Rush, Queen, Mötley Crüe, Soundgarden, and the James Gang who hadn’t played together in over 10 years. These bands also performed with Kesha, P!nk, Miley Cyrus, Alanis Morissette, Derek Day, Joan Jett, Nancy Wilson, Taylor Momsen, and even Dave Chapelle gave a performance of “Creep” by Radiohead with the Foo Fighters.
There were 2 moments of the night that were especially memorable. The first is when Brian May of Queen performed “Love of My Life”. It was a special request made by Taylor’s wife, Alison, as a gift to the love of her life. This was one of the most emotional moments of the night. Everyone in the Forum lifted their lights as well as joined in with Brian May as he sang for Taylor. (clip 3)
The second, and most special, was when Taylor’s son, Shane, joined the Foo Fighters on the drums for “My Hero” and “I’ll Stick Around”. The emotion was felt throughout the entire room. You could see the look on the faces of Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel, Rami Jaffee, and Dave Grohl whenever they looked at Shane while he was playing. You could feel how proud they were of him. (clip 11)
Every performer that walked on that stage had a story about Taylor. They told of his passion, his love, his friendship, his kindness, his generosity, and much more. Dave even mentioned how he had been told by over 50 people that they talked to Taylor every day. There was no other way to say goodbye to such a tremendous human and musician but to bring his heroes, friends, and fans together.
We’ll never forget him.
