Wow, what a night. The Coors Event Centre never lets down, even for a Sunday night. Silverstein, along with its supporting acts, hit the stage in Saskatoon on April 30th for a full night of emote music. Walking into the doors of The Coors Event Centre to a packed venue is always an extremely promising indication of a dedicated and interactive crowd. A night a photographer dreams of and let me tell you, everyone delivered.

One Step Closer, a band from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, took the opening slot of the night with no disappointed patrons in the venue. From the first vocals, first guitar riff and the first cymbal crash of the night I could feel the crowd connecting to the melodic hardcore band. With hands raised and bodies moving, One Step Closer underwent a few fun lineup changes including Tommy Norton moving from drums to guitar and Silverstein’s Paul Koehler filling in on drums for a song. There is something about instrumental position changes that I love, especially when a member of a different band joins in for a song. It shows the true support and comradery that happens on a tour.

Following, See You Space Cowboy took the second slot on an already ecstatic pit. When I say this band came in swinging – I mean it and it’s nearly an understatement. The vocals in this group are incredible. There is an assortment of vocal styles from the frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa herself, along with the group vocals from Ethan Sgarbossa, Taylor Allen and AJ Tartol which creates a tonality of ‘everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to have one’ from the band. Though the breakdown of who had which voice had me thrown for a loop, I was extremely entertained. Mosh pits were formed, crowd surfing began, and a ‘wall of death’ was attempted, it was a phenomenal experience.

Overhearing “we HAVE to get to the front of the stage, Dayseeker is up next” from concert go-ers has to be my favourite thing. When committed fans are so excited that their favourite band is up next is something that I wish every band could hear. It’s truly something that drives a band. Dayseeker took the stage to a sea full of fans and immediately married to that sea. They followed every move and every word, I noticed 5-6 crowd surfers just in a single outro of a song. Something I haven’t seen ever in my show-going time. Dayseeker truly has a bond like no other with their fans, they all relate to at least a handful of carefully written lyric lines. The highlight of my ENTIRE evening had to be watching and listening to their drummer, Zac Mayfield. His sharp yet powerful snare tone brought the whole set together. When a drummer can make their role look effortless, it makes my jaw drop every time.

Now I will admit, I am a long-time Silverstein fan. If anyone says that ‘My Heroine’ doesn’t make you sing, you have to be lying. Hitting their well-earned and well-deserved headliner slot for the 20-something year in a row, Silverstein delivered. This band has shaped a whole era of people and doesn’t seem to disappoint. While touring their new album ‘Misery Made Me’ Silverstein played a great balance of new and older songs in their discography. The last time I saw them, they were on their ‘When Broken Is Easily Fixed: 15-Year Anniversary’ tour back in 2019 and this group has not stepped off the gas an ounce in the last 4 years. Everything sounded spot on from my memory and I thoroughly enjoyed their new song ‘Bankrupt’ which has a great mix of guttural & melodic vocal styles along with a perfect low-end guitar tone.
