To finish off the week, thousands of people gathered in Houstonโ€™s Toyota Center to watch Weezer put on an amazing show. I had never seen any Weezer concert videos, so I had no idea what to expect. Although I was on my last legs after a long week, this show ended up becoming one of my favorite concerts Iโ€™ve been to so far in my career.

Part of what made this show so special to me was the photography I got to take. It was only my second gig at the Toyota Center and my first time photographing a show there from the pit, so I had no idea what to expect. When the show started, it felt like I could feel the individual sound waves traveling through my body with enough force to knock someone over. Of course, I loved concert photography before Weezer, but photographing this show made me love it even more.

The set for the show was amazing, with so many details that the more you looked, the more you noticed. The set pieces showed a house in what looked like a smaller suburban neighborhood, complete with a pair of shoes on a power line, a โ€œBeware of Dogโ€ poster on the fence, a mailbox, and an electricity box. The stage visuals were just as impressive, with different visuals playing on the screen throughout the show. During โ€œI Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams,โ€ the screen turned red, with a swirling black circle framing different people on stage. Some songs also featured pyrotechnics, smoke, and sparks, which I wasnโ€™t entirely expecting. During โ€œBuddy Holly,โ€ confetti shot out over the crowd, and during โ€œIsland in the Sun,โ€ pool inflatables were passed around the venue and tossed from person to person. These little touches made the show feel like more than just a band playing through a setlist, giving the audience plenty to look at and making each song feel a little different.

Along with the technical aspects of the show, Weezerโ€™s stage presence was captivating. Between certain songs, frontman Rivers Cuomo shared stories and threw in bits of humor that kept the audience engaged. It was clear that there was strong chemistry between the band members, which only made their performance better. The concert also had an outgoing, almost playful vibe, with speaking sections that helped move along a storyline throughout the show. Two of the songs were performed at a โ€œCampfire,โ€ accompanied by gorgeous firefly visuals on the screen. One of my favorite moments was when they brought a crowd member up to play the โ€œBuddy Hollyโ€ riff on air guitar during the song. They introduced her before the song, and when the riff came up, she was shown on the screen playing along. She appeared to be younger, and I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to be part of the show like that. I know that moment will be one of her favorite memories for years to come.

The crowdโ€™s energy was another huge part of what made this show so memorable. At most larger shows I go to, people in the higher sections usually donโ€™t dance or sing as much as the people on the floor. With Weezer, though, everyone seemed to be involved and having the time of their lives. Watching the different sections of the crowd was extremely enjoyable for me because there didnโ€™t seem to be a single person who wasnโ€™t having a great time. The fansโ€™ dedication was also clear, with several people holding signs and posters for the band and even more people wearing gold outfits to show their support. Seeing so many people getting involved and showing their love for the band added even more to the atmosphere of the night.

Weezerโ€™s show was an extremely special and unique experience, easily making it one of my favorite concerts Iโ€™ve been to. Between the detailed set, the bandโ€™s stage presence, and the energy of the crowd, there was so much to enjoy throughout the night. It was the perfect end to a tiring week, and I definitely want to catch their show again the next time theyโ€™re in my city. Weezer is continuing their tour through Arizona, California, Nevada, and Illinois, along with several stops in Japan and Europe. If youโ€™re like me and want to see them as soon as possible, grab a ticket while you can!
