At the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Boys Like Girls brought their Soundtrack of Your Life tour to a packed and energized crowd, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album and the 17th anniversary of Love Drunk. For many in attendance, this wasn’t just another concert. It was a time capsule.

A drummer performs on stage surrounded by multiple retro television screens displaying visuals, with dramatic lighting and smoke effects.

Before the band even stepped on stage, the tone was set. Television screens lit up with flashes of defining cultural moments, from the war in Iraq to Barack Obama and even the unforgettable interruption of Taylor Swift by Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was a visual reminder of the era that shaped so much of the band’s identity and their fans’ lives. Then, one by one, the band took the stage. Drummer John Keefe walked out first, cigarette in hand, cutting through the fog with a cool, effortless presence that immediately set the mood.

They kicked things off with Love Drunk, opening with “Heart Heart Heartbreak.” From the first note, it was clear that the band hadn’t lost a step. They sounded just as tight and energetic as ever, but what stood out even more was how much fun they were having on stage. Guitarist Jamel Hawke brought a level of energy that was impossible to ignore, jumping around the stage and fully immersing himself in every moment. As a photographer, it made capturing the performance even more exciting. Every movement felt alive, every frame full of motion.

Frontman Martin Johnson sounded remarkably consistent, delivering vocals that felt nearly identical to when I first saw the band live back in 2010. There’s something rare about hearing songs that defined a certain time in your life and realizing they still hit just as hard years later. Now being in my 30s, those lyrics carry a different weight, and judging by the crowd, I wasn’t alone in feeling that. Fans screamed every word back to the band, especially during tracks like “Contagious,” “Two Is Better Than One,” and “Love Drunk.”

While photographing the set, I had a moment that felt bigger than the show itself. I was suddenly back in 2008, 16 years old, working as a lifeguard at a local water park, watching “The Great Escape” music video on MTV before heading into a shift. That song became the soundtrack of my entire summer. I played it nonstop, eventually diving into their entire catalog. Lyrics like “You’re the soundtrack of my summer” from “Thunder” weren’t just words. They were real. Standing there now, 18 years later, photographing the very band that shaped that moment in my life, it all came full circle.

After finishing the Love Drunk set, the band took a brief 10-minute intermission. Honestly, the first half alone felt like a complete show. I would have walked out completely satisfied. But then the countdown hit zero, and everything changed.

The unmistakable intro to “The Great Escape” rang out, and the crowd absolutely exploded. Every single person in that venue was moving. At one point, I watched a group crouch down during the verse, slowly rising together before jumping in unison as the chorus hit. It was one of those moments that perfectly captured the collective energy in the room.

The self-titled set that followed was pure nostalgia. Hearing songs like “Five Minutes to Midnight” and “Heels Over Head” brought a rush of memories flooding back. I realized I still knew every detail. Every harmony, every guitar layer, every background ad-lib. And looking around, it was clear so did everyone else.

What made the night special wasn’t just the performance, though it was undeniably strong. It was a shared experience. A room full of people reconnecting with a time in their lives through music that still holds meaning years later.

Boys Like Girls didn’t just put on a show. They reminded everyone why these songs mattered in the first place.
