The Australian teenagers who formed 5 Seconds of Summer in 2011 are now all grown and their music keeps evolving with them. From covers on Youtube and Pop-punk shows while opening for One Direction in 2013/2014, they had to fight their way up against the boyband culture they didn’t want to be associated with. In the last album, the song “Boyband” clearly is an inside joke talking about that. Today, 5 SOS is a multi-platinium selling band with fans all around the world.
Montreal was more than happy to witness their evolution during the EVERYONE’S A STAR TOUR at the Bell Center.

The support act for this show was The Band Camino, an indie pop-rock band with 80’s inspired sounds. With a lot of energy and enjoyment to meet this new public, they played for the first 40 min, sharing songs from 6 of their albums with the fans. They smoothly warmed the crowd for the headliners.
It’s now time for the 5 SOS set, opening with a documentary style video on the big screen. Then, the band started with “NOT OK,” one of their most recent songs. It immediately set the mood with their own recognizable genre : a mix of heavy and alternative 2000-ish vibey songs with emo and sarcastic lyrics. Confetti’s already flying everywhere. This show will definitely be something to remember.
They said it themself, they wanted to create the greatest 5 Seconds of Summer concert that ever existed. They thought hard about it and made a show for everyone in the crowd, OG or new fans.
Every night, they do something different in honor of the city they are in. In our city, they put up a “Montreal takeover” guide, talking about the famous poutine and Celine Dion. Luke was even designated to try and talk like a real French Canadian. (Spoiler alert : it wasn’t his best achievement but we appreciate the effort.)

Through the night, we had the chance to listen to songs from each of their albums, including the very first one and their solo album during “ Act IV – The breakup”. In their solo projects, Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton discovered what makes them who they are as individuals and they all add their little something to the newest album EVERYONE’S A STAR. They all have a completely different style in their music. Somehow it makes a great mix when they’re put together and fans are obsessed with it.
The stage was amazing to see ! They brought a pink limousine on stage where Ashton’s drum was placed for the majority of the show. There was also an extension in a circle form where they often came to be as close as possible to the crowd. They even put a second drum set at the front during Telephone Busy. The lights, videos and camera work were crazy, full of colors and effects, lyrics projected on the big screen but it also showed close ups of each member.
Some moments need to be highlighted. Like the wonderful performance of “Ghost of You,” one of their most precious ballads which ended with the iconic note change from Luke. Or the secret song chosen by the public being “Don’t Stop,” a song from their first album. They always say that they HATE performing this one, but they do it anyway because the fans always get what they want ! They surprised us during “Everyone’s a Star,” the encore, by walking through the venue from the back of the room. Some people were delighted to see them so close to them for a few minutes.
The show ended with “Youngblood,” their greatest commercial success.
5 Seconds of Summer love what they do. They enjoy making jokes on stage with their best friends and conquering the hearts of millions of people around the world.
As a fan from their debut, I felt a warm feeling of pride and nostalgia seeing how much they achieved through all of those years. They said it was their greatest show but I think they will keep on giving us amazing memories for many years.
